Best Time to Visit Spiti Valley

Choose the season that matches the Himalayan journey you want

Spiti does not feel the same all year

The season you choose can change almost every part of the journey.

In the warmer months you may be able to travel the wider circuit, including high mountain routes and remote villages. In winter much of the landscape is under snow and the journey becomes more demanding, usually dependent on the Kinnaur road.

The useful question is not only “when is the weather best?” It is: what kind of Spiti journey do I want? High villages? The full circuit? Chandratal when it is open? Or Spiti in winter?

Road openings and closures change every year with snowfall, weather and local conditions.

June to September

Summer — the wider Spiti circuit

For many travellers this is the most convenient window. Snow begins clearing from several high routes, and more destinations may open as the season progresses.

Subject to that year’s roads, a broader journey can include Kinnaur, Tabo, Dhankar, Kaza, Key Monastery, high villages, Kunzum Pass and the Chandratal region. The Shimla/Kinnaur to Manali circuit may also become possible once connecting passes open.

Summer suits

  • First-time Spiti visitors
  • Road-trip travellers and groups
  • Photography
  • People who want to cover more locations
April to May

Early season — winter still in the high country

This is a transition. Landscapes can still show strong traces of winter, while lower sections of the route gradually become easier. Access to some high-altitude destinations may remain limited.

Choose this period if you

  • Prefer fewer travellers on the road
  • Enjoy dramatic Himalayan landscapes
  • Are comfortable with flexible plans
  • Accept that the full circuit may not yet be open

Build the trip around places that are actually accessible, not around locations that may still be under snow.

Monsoon months and the road in

Spiti sits in a cold desert and does not take monsoon the way lower Himachal does. The journey to Spiti can still be affected by rain in Kinnaur and other connecting stretches. Weather inside the valley and conditions on the Shimla–Kinnaur approach are not the same thing.

September to October

Autumn — clearer light, fewer people

Summer traffic eases. The brown and gold of the Trans-Himalaya stays visually strong. Mornings and evenings cool quickly.

Autumn may suit

  • Photographers
  • Couples and slow travellers
  • Visitors who prefer fewer crowds

As winter approaches, confirm accessibility before you lock the itinerary.

November to March

Winter — treat it as an expedition

The landscape becomes more extreme. Temperatures drop sharply and snow can close or slow roads. The summer Manali–Kunzum line should not be treated as a regular option. Winter journeys generally use the Shimla–Kinnaur side, subject to conditions.

Be prepared for

  • Very cold temperatures
  • Snow-covered roads
  • Possible itinerary changes
  • Limited access to some villages
  • Longer travel times and high altitude

Winter suits travellers who want

  • Snow-covered Spiti
  • Remote Himalayan life
  • A quieter journey
  • Winter photography
  • A more demanding road trip

Do not plan winter Spiti with a rigid expectation of visiting every famous stop. Build in buffer time and acclimatisation.

Full circuit and Chandratal

Travellers who want the wider circuit need months when the high connecting routes are open. Opening and closing dates depend on that year’s snowfall and clearance. Confirm current road status before booking a Shimla/Kinnaur plus Manali combination.

Chandratal is highly seasonal. Access depends on high-altitude roads and local rules. If the whole trip is built around the lake, choose a window when access is expected — and keep flexibility for weather.

Which season should you choose?

SummerWidest range of places; best chance of a broader circuit
Early seasonFewer people; partial access to high country
AutumnClear landscapes and a quieter road
WinterSnow as the priority; a demanding journey

Before you confirm dates, check road status, weather, high-route access, vehicle suitability and rooms. A good Spiti trip is planned around the conditions of that year, not a fixed route copied from last summer.
